Govt keen on Kalengwa Mine re-opening
By SILUMESI MALUMOGOVERNMENT is keen to see Kalengwa Mine in the North-Western Province re-open as soon as the court settles the ownership wrangles, Vice President Inonge Wina has said.Ms Wina said the matter had been in the courts of law or many years and the Government could not deal with it.The Vice President was responding to a question from Mufumbwe Member of Parliament (MP), Elliot Kamondo who wanted to know when Kalengwa Mine would re-open.Mr Kamondo said that Government had been promising the people of Mufumbwe that the mine would re-open but there were no operations up to now.But Ms Wina said: “Even when we would like to see that the mine is re-opened but the issue is that the matter is in the courts of law.”She said that currently Government’s hands were tied as the matter was before the courts and nay interventions could amount to contempt.“Government’s hands currently are tied, as much as we would want to see the Kalengwa mine re-open the issue is before the court.“This matter has been before the court for past years now and it is not possible that Government can deal with the issue which is in court,” she said
