LET’S HONOUR KK – MAKEMBO
By MICHAEL MIYOBA THE Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) has called on government through the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Child Development to honour Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who died on June 17 at Maina Soko Medical Centre by adding the “Super KK” title to all national teams. ZASPOFA patron Peter Makembo said adding the Super KK title to all national teams representing different sports disciplines will maintain Dr. Kaunda’s legacy as a passionate sports follower. According to a letter dated June 29 and directed to the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Sports Youth and Child Development Dr. John Phiri, Makembo said Kaunda was a passionate supporter of sport and a humanist whose love for sports especially football saw the Zambia national soccer team nicknamed the “KK Eleven.” Makembo said Kaunda’s passion and dedication to the development of sports during his 27-year  rule cannot be overemphasised. “As sports fans, we would like to appeal through your respectable office our desire to honour Dr. Kenneth Kaunda by renaming all the national sports teams ‘Super KK’ for his passion and dedication to the development of Sports in Zambia,” read part of the letter. “Dr. Kenneth Kaunda will be remembered as an iconic figure not just in Zambia but across Africa. “Adding the ‘Super KK’ title to the various national teams will ensure that his legacy is sustained as a sports loving President who served this great country from 1964 when Zambia attained its Independence to 1991,” Makembo said. Kaunda who was Zambia’s first president and one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism died aged 97. He will be put to rest on July 7 at the presidential burial site in Lusaka.
