FORMER President Rupiah Banda has appealed to possible losers in Thursday’s election to graciously accept defeat. Banda, said in a message that the tradition of peaceful transitions in Zambia should be maintained.“In every election, there losers and winners. Winners must be magnanimous and show respect to the losers, the losers on the losers on the hand must able to accept graciously and congratulate the others, re-organise and try again in next elections,” President Banda.Banda advised politicians against activities that would jeopardise the peace and unity that the country has enjoyed for years.“In every election there are winners and losers. Any attempts by any entity acting alone or in consent with others to impose a leadership outside the concept one-man-one -vote, will be an assault on the sacrifices of our founding fathers and would impair the sovereignty of our country and also jeopardise the peace and unity of this generation and those to come. We have chosen for ourselves a system that gives us legitimacy to those in government through the ballot box,” he said.“I am therefore appealing to all politicians to ensure they do not destroy Zambia by desisting from retrogressive and divisive activities such as violence, hate speech including ethnic and racial profiling in their campaigns.”And Banda said every political players must have confidence in the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s mandate to manage Thursday’s elections.“As Zambians, we have great confidence in the governance institutions we have created for ourselves. The Electoral Commission of Zambia therefore, in this instance, they have to be given space and necessary cooperation and support so that they can fulfil this mandate in a satisfactory manner,” Banda said.
