Unemployed youth fined for deflowering girl
MARY PHIRI writes A 35-year-old man of Twapia Township in Ndola has been ordered to pay K5,000 for deflowering a 26-year-old girl. In this matter, Lucy Kanyambo 56, sued Jonathan Chipoya for compensation for damages of virginity of her daughter. The case came before Kabushi Local Court senior presiding magistrate Agnes Mulenga and Evelyn Nalwizya yesterday. Kanyambo told the court that in 2011 Chipoya impregnated her daughter and he was summoned by the family of which he accepted. She said it was later agreed that Chipoya would be charged for damages when the child was born. “But after the child was born, he was not showing up for the meetings even after making countless efforts to follow him at his place. “So up to date we have not charged him because he refuses to attend meetings and does not support the child, I decided to sue him because it’s been long and the child is grown up now, ” she said. In his defencem, Chipoya said he said he could not attend the meetings because the dates were not convenient for him. He added that he was not in employment which was the reason why he was failing to support the child. In judgement, Chipoya was ordered to compensate Kanyambo K5,000 with the first instalment being a K500 then K300 every month. “You must start supporting that child because if she brings you to court for child support, the court will order you to be bringing an amount of money as child support, that is your child take full responsibility,” Ms Mulenga said.
