Underwear ends marriage
MARY PHIRI writes A 28-YEAR-OLD woman in Ndola has narrated before a local court that her husband’s infidelity has pushed her to start drinking as he would sometimes return home with other women’s underwear in his pocket. Winny Mwiinga, 28, said this in defence in a divorce case initiated by her husband Godfrey Simbela 32 of Kabushi Township. Mwiinga told the Kabushi Local Court that when they got married, she was not drinking but that her husband introduced her to beer. She said her husband would take her out, drinking from night club to the other and they would only get back home in the morning. The woman said, later, problems started when her husband started going out alone and would come home late with women’s under wear in his pockets. “When he started this behaviour, I got hurt and resorted to drinking because alcohol comforts me, he sleeps with other women and does not respect me as his wife,” Mwiinga complained. In his testimony, Simbela said his wife had gone to extremes, as she would spend all money meant for house groceries on beer. He said that he had tried involving elders from both families but she could not change adding that she was now an alcoholic.  “This woman drinks everything from Kachasu to Chibuku and when she has no money, she resorts to selling things in the house. I am fed up I just want this marriage to end. What kind of a man can live with such a woman?” he lamented. In passing judgment, presiding Magistrate Mildred Namwizye and Evelyn Nalwizya granted divorce. The court ordered Simbela to compensate his wife with K10,000 . The Sun
