Truck driver admits dangerous driving charge
A TRUCK driver of Chipata district has pleaded guilty to causing the death of his friend though dangerous driving.Chrispin Chilumbu appeared before Lusaka Judge Dancewell Bowa who is sitting as Chipata High Court Judge for one count of causing death by dangerous driving.Particulars of the offence are that Chilumbu on 5 January, 2020, in Nyimba caused the death of Lackson Matowa 30, while driving a Volvo Truck along the Great East road in a manner that was dangerous to the public considering the amount of traffic that was on the same road.It is alleged that Chilumbu lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and hit into an on-coming truck, which was driven by Chester Phiri.Lackson, who was a passenger in his vehicle jumped through the window of the truck and landed on the ground with the head.He was confirmed dead upon arrival at Nyimba district hospital and the Postmortem report signed by Doctor Danny Kabaku revealed that Lackson died as a result of internal bleeding and head injuries. In mitigation Chilumbu, who was represented by Legal Aid Board Counsel Sally Bwalya asked the court for leniency as he is remorseful and regrets having caused the death of his friend. She said Chilumbu’s employer assisted Lackson’s family with 8 thousand Kwacha towards funeral expenses and also compensated the family by constructing a house valued at 30 thousand Kwacha.Judge Bowa adjourned the matter for judgement.
