‘Take boxing as your job’
MATHEWS NDANDULA writes DRIVEN by his passion for his former constituency, the mayor of Lusaka yesterday visited Matero Stadium in the company of Zambian Breweries representatives to make a donation towards the community youth club. Sampa called on the youth at Evergreen Boxing club to focus on improving their boxing skills if they were to winn the support of sponsors and to develop a profitable sports career. “I am not a Mayor of talking, I am a man of action. I want people to see what am doing. So I’m here today with Zambian Breweries to see you and see how best we can work with them in helping you as boxers,” Mayor Miles Sampa said. “I don’t want you the youths to go to Magodi and drink because it’s closed neither do I want you to go to Pablo, there is corona I went and closed Magodi because I found them kissing, dancing, hugging and wawawa. I don’t want you to get sick I want the youths to be empowered by many projects, take boxing as your job and do the best. I will help you look for sponsors.” And Zambian Breweries legal and corporate affairs director EzikelSekeli said the move by the mayor to engage his company is a good one, adding that his firm had done a lot of community programmes in Kanyama and Bauleni among others and so Matero can benefit too. He then urged the youths to drink responsibly and cautioned that those under the age of 18 years should not drink alcohol. A representative of Evergreen Boxing Club expressed their gratitude at the donation but explained that the stable needs help in terms of equipment if the boxers are to do better. “I am feeling nice because the mayor has brought to us visitors who are willing to sponsor boxing. We appreciate the mayor for coming on board and supporting us because we don’t have any equipment for boxing,” said Evergreen Boxing Club coach Simata Imbuwa. The Matero-based boxing stable is happy with the support coming from the Mayor but expressed the need for more support. The Sun
