Rural communities tipped on bee keeping
MARTIN MASHEKWA Writes@SunZambianKALOMO council secretary, Oswell Mpofu has urged rural communities to embrace bee keeping as an alternative income generating venture in their locales.Speaking when he officiated at a joint four day bee keeping training workshop for Kakuyu and Malilwe cooperatives in Mubanga area over the weekend, Mr. Mpofu said communities should learn other income generating ventures and desist from cutting of tree for charcoal as a source of income for their households.“I urge you to take up other initiatives such as bee keeping as an alternative for income generating ventures. It is cost effective and all that you need is to keep the environment safe and harness the environment to realize the benefits of this project whose products such as honey and wax have ready market,” Mr. Mpofu observed. And Kalomo district forest officer, Ray Mwansa has implored bee keeping cooperatives to have a sense of ownership for projects which government and its cooperating partners have brought to their doorsteps. The bee keeping project in both Malilwe and Kakuyu cooperatives in Naluja ward of Kalomo is a component of the Strengthening Climate Resilience in the Kafue basin (SCRIKA) project aimed at improving the welfare and livelihood of the targeted households in the catchment area.Among the projects in the SCRIKA component include bee keeping, goat rearing and solar powered boreholes for small scale gardening in Bbilili, Omba and Naluja wards of Kalomo. – ZANIS
