Make us proud, Makembo tips Chipolopolo
MICHAEL MIYOBA writes @SunZambian ZAMBIA Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) patron Peter Makembo has urged the Zambia National soccer team to make the country proud as they compete in the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) kicking off in Cameroon. Meanwhile, the Zambia national football team have been officially welcomed into Buea by South West Region Governor, Okalia Gilai. Makembo said the Zambian soccer fans are hungry for success having seen the team failing to qualify for two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He said victory in Cameroon will bring hope to the many soccer fans who have endured unpleasing results at senior national team level. Makembo believe Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević has assembled a strong squad consisting of the best talented local players who can triumph in Cameroon. “Time for redemption is now. The CHAN presents our national team a chance to redeem themselves from disappointing results recorded in the past. “Soccer fans have seen our national team failing to qualify to two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations and now they are hungry to see the team succeed and victory in Cameroon will give them hope for a better future for our football,” Makembo said. “Our encouragement to the boys is stay focused and fight hard for the millions of Zambians who cheering for them back home. Our hope is for the team to come back victorious and we know that they can deliver for the people of Zambia,” he said. “We believe in the team selected, we believe in the technical bench led by coach Micho and we trust that the boys will make the country proud.” Meanwhile the Chipolopolo boys have continued their CHAN preps from their new base in Buea with their first training session held on Thursday at Molyko Omnisports Stadium. Micho led his charges in a late afternoon session after having arrived in Beau on Wednesday night from Douala. The 28-member team is zeroing in on preparations for the tournament that kicks off today with the host Cameroon facing Zimbabwe. Zambia who will compete in Group D at the CHAN alongside Guinea, Tanzania and Namibia will kick off their campaign at the CHAN with a tie against Tanzania on Tuesday.
