Luangwa fish trade hit by Covid-19 slow down
LINDA SOKO TEMBO writes WE have felt the impact of the COVID-19 in Luangwa district because people’s business have really been affected and have gone down, Luangwa District Commissioner Ngoni Moyo has said. Mr Moyo said that one of the major business that was done in the district was fishing and Mozambique and Zimbabwe had closed their borders to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.   In an interview, Mr Moyo said trade at the two borders contributed to business of the local people in the district, as they also crossed the borders coming to Zambia to buy cloths foodstuff among other things.  “Business at the habour has somehow gone down because Mozambique has closed its border up to May 30, meaning Zambians are not going are not ordering fish and because of that the business has really gone down,” he said. “The Zimbabwean border is still closed these are the two countries that have been boosting our local business by buying in our local shops as we cross the borders to order fish.” Mr Moyo said that, as a district, they would continue to sensitize the community and encourage people to wear masks, keeping social distance and observe hand washing, among other Covid-19 preventive measures. He said Government had promised the district a pontoon that would connect to Zimbabwe and that it was one area they felt would bring about economic development in the district apart from fishing.
