Kamanga police post burnt as residents riot over killing
By NOEL IYOMBWARIOTING Kamanga residents in Lusaka yesterday torched a police post in the area and damaged police vehicles after an officer shot dead a civilian during an operation to check on compliance for Covid-19.The incident happened after midnight when police reserve officers and members of the neighborhood watch went to close a night club in the area which was reported to have been operating beyond stipulated hours.Police spokesperson Esther Katongo who confirmed the incident said that as police tried to close the premises, patrons rose against the officers and during the process of the confusion, a firearm went off and shot Timothy Zulu aged 17 years of Kamanga Compound who died instantly. She said that the confusion sparked riots in which Kamanga Police post and two police motor vehicles have been damaged while one of-ficer who was among those who went to pick the body of the victim has been injured.Ms. Katongo said that calm has been restored and officers are on the ground keeping vigil and that an inquiry has been launched into the incident.She appeal to members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue in the matter.And area councilor Smart Mwitwa confirmed the incident in an interview and said that police are man-ning the area.
