Govt tightens Covid-19 rules enforcement
By SIMON MUNTEMBA GOVERNMENT has warned the public against gathering in large numbers during the festive season to avert the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo said Zambians should not drop the guard but continue observing health preventive measures against Covid-19. He said cases of Covid-19 were on the increase in other countries and that should be used as a warning to avoid gathering in large numbers during the festive season. Mr Kampyongo said at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that his ministry would during this festive season work with the Ministry of Health to ensure that regulations meant to avert the spread of the disease were enforced. He said joint foot patrols involving the police, local authorities, and Ministry of Health would be conducted indiscriminately. The minister has also directed the police to work closely with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) in providing joint motorised patrols across the country to ensure the travelling public was protected from accidents that can be avoided. Mr Kampyongo advised motorists to avoid drunk driving which was the main cause of most traffic accidents. Meanwhile, Mr Kampyongo said Government was aware that the UPND was mobilising members to cause chaos and instability in the country. The minister said it was sad that some individuals were planning some unlawful procession with a view of obstructing police from questioning the UPND president Mr Hakainde Hichilema. He however warned that the police were alert and that all those involved would have themselves to blame should they be arrested. Mr Kampyongo said Mr Hichilema was not above the law, adding that any individual suspected to have committed a crime should be answerable to the law enforcement organisations without any interference.
