Four suspects arrested for piracy

JACKSON MAPAPAYI writes POLICE in Solwezi through the Intellectual Property Unit have arrested four people for being in possession of devices used in the production of visual and audio products. The four suspects were apprehended during the operation on makeshift shops within the Central Business District. North-Western Province Commissioner of police, Elias Chushi, said that 15 devices used for making copies, among them 12 computers and three laptops, had been seized. He said the suspects would be charged in accordance with the provisions of section 28 of the Copyright and Performance Rights Acts chapter 406 of Tue Laws of Zambia as amended by Act No 25 of 2010. He said the suspects would appear in court soon. “I would therefore, like to warn all infringers of copyrighted works to desist from compiling, offering and selling musical and visual works of other artists as this amount to theft,” he said. Mr Chushi said police would not relent in bringing to book all culprits because piracy has a negative impact on national security. Piracy, he said, promoted illegal border transfers of money and money laundering. In Manyinga, police are investigating a case of murder in which a three-month-old baby girl died while on its mother’s back. Mr Chushi said on Monday, Ela Chingungu aged 56 of Chief Sikufele area in Manyinga reported that her grand daughter died after crying for almost two hours while strapped on her mother’s back. He said the mother identified as Evelyn Mashawu aged 23, also of Chief Sikufele’s area thought the baby was feeling cold and strapped her on her back with warm material. “Later, her baby stopped crying and was discovered dead,” Mr Chushi said.
