Farm labourer jailed 9 years for fatal argument
THE Chipata High Court has sentenced a 46 year old man of Chipata to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour for one count of manslaughter. Adamson Katenda Nkhoma who unlawfully caused the death of Seveliano Gabriel Phiri appeared before High Court Judge WinieMwenda yesterday for sentencing. Facts are that Nkhoma on 23 July 2019 caused the death of his co-worker Seveliano Gabriel Phiri. The duo were both labourers at a farm. On July 22nd 2019, Phiri went to the convict’s house and started insulting him, a situation that angered Nkhoma who came out of the house and started beating the victim with a sugar cane. Nkhoma later grabbed a machete and hit Phiri twice on the head, and he succumbed to death the following day. In mitigation, the convict through defence counsel Sally Bwalya asked the court to exercise leniency as he had regretted causing the death of his co-worker who was also his friend and vowed to manage his temper. And Dr. Justice Mwenda said considering the mitigation presented before the court, she had exercised leniency and sentenced Nkhoma to 9 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the day of his arrest. – ZANIS The Sun
