ECZ ENLISTS SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS FOR POLLS
By ADRIAN MWANZA SIGN language interpreters will be placed at polling stations during the August 12 general elections to cater for the deaf, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has said. Al Ghurair printing company of Dubai completed the printing of braille Jackets aimed at catering for visually-impaired individuals. ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager, Patricia Luhanga, said ECZ would also include sign language interpreters at polling centres to guide the deaf. Recently, Zambia Federation for Disability Organisation (ZAFOD) challenged the ECZ to provide for people with other disabilities apart from the visually impaired. ZAFOD said that in as much as ECZ had included braille jackets, it should consider the deaf and dumb. But Ms Luhanga clarified that ECZ was conducting massive sensitisation programmes which were meant to engage differently abled individuals. “The thing is that we are not just looking at one type, as you are aware disabilities vary but we are going to ensure that no one is left behind,” Ms Luhanga said.
