DUMPSITE BLOCKS MATERO ROADS
By SIMON MUNTEMBA RESIDENTS of Matero have bemoaned the failure by Lusaka City Council (LCC) to remove the huge heaps of garbage at the Chunga dumpsite that have blocked the road from Great North Road to Matero. The road leading to the Chingwele cemetery and Barlastone Park has been blocked, forcing motorists to use alternative routes while unemployed youths had invaded the place to scavenge for food. This came to light when Chunga residents called Lusaka Lawyer and PF Matero aspiring Parliamentary candidate Dickson Jere to help them deal with the issue. “This is very dangerous and life-threatening. I will immediately engage the ministry of local government to find a temporary solution to open the road for now,” Jere said when he met the residents. Teachers at Namando and Nelson Mandela schools in Matero complained that they and pupils were unable to use the road because of the huge heap of garbage but instead had to take longer route to get to the schools. Mourners have also expressed concern that they have to leave vehicles and walk long distance to access the burial sites as the roads have been blocked while some of the graves have been buried with the filthy. Efforts to get LCC public relations officer proved futile by the press time.
