Police in Chama District of Muchinga Province have arrested a 23-year-old woman for dumping a newly-born baby in a toilet.
Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Geoffrey Kunda, confirmed the development and identified the suspect as Rebecca Mwale of Chizimba village in Senior Chief Kambombo’s area.
Mr Kunda explained that the woman allegedly dumped the baby yesterday around 03:00 hours, but members of the public spotted her and immediately alerted the police.
“Police visited the scene and findings were that immediately after delivery, the mother dumped the baby in a pit latrine and the baby was retrieved by members of the community,” Mr Kunda said.
He said the suspect was in police custody while the baby was receiving treatment at Chama District Hospital
