Mwinilunga,: – Six chiefs from different parts of the country have expressed happiness with the level of investment in the aquaculture sector by Chief Kanyama of the Lunda speaking in Mwinilunga district, North Western Province. The traditional leaders included senior chief Nsama of Nsama district in Northern Province, chiefs Chipepo of Chirundu district in Lusaka province, Chibale from Serenje district in Central province, chief Mwansakombe of Chifunabuli district in Luapula province, Lumpuma from Lufwanyama district on the Copper belt province and Mpempo from Kanchibiya district in Muchinga province.Chief Mwansakombe said despite his chiefdom having some fish farming projects, he has never seen a large scale project at chiefdom level like the one in Kanyama chiefdom adding that he will take advantage of the abundant water bodies in his chiefdom to replicate what he saw in Kanyama.“We have a lot of water, where I come from there is Lake Bangweulu, Lake Chifunabuli but we have not exploited the water that we have,” he said.Chief Chibale said he is impressed to see how the hatchery and breeding process is done and has called for the extension of the aquaculture funding programme by government to his chiefdom. And Chief Chipepo, who is also house of chiefs’ whip, said traditional leadership should embrace working with government to bring development to their chiefdoms as evidenced by the relationship between chief Kanyama and government.‘’Indeed we have to go into what government wants people of Zambia to go into aquaculture that is what the President is very much interested in”, he said.Meanwhile, Betty Kanyama who represented chief Kanyama thanked government for coming up with educational exchange visits among traditional leaders aimed at sharing knowledge in various economic activities happening in individual chiefdoms.Speaking at the same event district commissioner, Anort Mapulanga said the aquaculture education exchange visit by their royal highnesses is an important government undertaking because visiting chiefs would learn through experience best aquaculture farming practices which they can replicate in their chiefdoms.
