3 districts get hand washing facilities
By ANDREW MUKOMA in Sinazongwe WATER Aid Zambia and Caritas Livingstone have started installing permanent hand washing facilities in densely populated and public places of Mwandi, Kazungula and Livingstone Districts. The project which is estimated to cost over K230,000 is aimed at improving water, sanitation and hygiene in key populated areas such as markets, schools, bus stations and clinics. Water Aid South-West Regional Programmes Coordinator Tassel Bulanda told the Daily Nation in a telephone interview that the hand washing facilities are being installed in such vicinities because of how populated the areas are. Mr Bulanda highlighted that congested areas are posed with a danger to residents hence the need to improve hygiene. He has urged beneficiaries to feel ownership of the facilities and protect them from all manner of vandalism. Mr Bulanda has advised members of the public to take advantage of the facilities and practice good and safe hygiene. So far, 13 handwashing facilities have been installed in Mwandi, 10 in Kazungula and 15 in Livingstone Districts respectively.
