ZAMBIA’S MAIZE, SOYA BEANS OUTPUT RISES
By SENIYA BANDA GOVERNMENT has projected an increase in maize production at 3, 620, 244 tonnes in the 2020/21 marketing season. Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo said the maize production would increase from 3, 387, 469 tonnes recorded in the 2019/20, to 3, 620, 244 tonnes to be recorded in the current agriculture marketing season. Announcing the crop forecasting survey for the 2020/2021 season, Mr Katambo said the increase represented a seven percent rise. He said Zambia was expected to record a maize surplus of 1, 528, 980 metric tonnes. He said 1, 671, 991 metric tonnes is expected to go towards consumption and 409, 347 towards industrial utilisation. Meanwhile, Mr Katambo said following the increase in maize production, Government has allowed export of 80, 000 tonnes under the Food Agriculture Organisation for humanitarian use. He said more maize was also expected to be exported under the millers and Government agreement.
