GOVERNMENT has extended the Mukula transit deal with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for one year.
DRC had written to the Zambian government to reconsider extending the deal because the Congolese had not completed transiting the consignment.
Zambia is therefore preparing a Statutory Instrument (SI) to support the extension so that trucks could start moving from the neighbouring country.
The deal is for Mukula logs to transit from the DRC through Zambia to various destinations.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Jean Kapata, told the Daily Nation that some figures in the deal were adjusted upwards as the old ones were not adequate.
“We hope that the SI will be signed soon so that the deal is sealed and trucks can get moving,” Ms Kapata said.
Recently, the Zambia Revenue Authority collected about K2 million through inspections and escort fees for trucks carrying Mukula logs from the DRC, transiting through Zambia.
