We won’t nationalise CEC – Nkhuwa
SUN BUSINESS reports @SunZambian WE have no plans of nationalising Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa has declared. Mr Nkhuwa said the PF Government was law-abiding and would not nationalise an entity like CEC without following the right procedure. The minister said Government had not made any decision to nationalise the private energy entity and that it was shocking that some individuals could mislead the nation. He said in an interview that issuing alarming statements was wrong and must be condemned. Mr Nkhuwa was reacting to claims by UPND chairperson for mines, Percy Chanda, who claimed that he had information that Government was on the verge of nationalising CEC. The minister indicated that it was important that people get facts instead of issuing alarming statements which had potential to cause panic among shareholders. “I can assure the nation that we have not discussed as Government at any time to nationalise CEC. That is just propaganda and Zambians should not take it seriously,” Mr Nkhuwa said. Meanwhile, Mr Nkhuwa said Zesco had commenced technical tests at Kafue Gorge Lower in readiness for commissioning of the first unit.
