MULENGA MUSONDA WRITES@SunZambian A 30-YEAR-OLD man who resorted to stealing in order to cover bus fare to Sesheke following a bereavement has been sentenced to 4 months in jail with hard labour.In this matter Dominic Kemba stood charged with Theft contrary to section 272 of the Penal Code of Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.Particulars of the offence are Kemba on September 1, 2020 stole 2×210 litres empty Drums valued at K350 the property of Arthur Munkombwe.When he appeared for plea before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, he willingly admitted the charge against him but insisted that he only stole one Drum.According to the facts dictated by Public Prosecutor Gerald Tembo, the accused was apprehended inside the complainant’s house by his son after the dog incessantly barked at him.When he was asked what he was doing in the yard, he lied that he wanted to draw water, but this raised suspicion by the complainant’s son who noticed that the drums were missing.The accused later confessed that he had thrown the drum outside the yard over the wall fence.In mitigation, Kemba pleaded for forgiveness, “had it not been for the funeral I would not have resorted to stealing,” he said.Magistrate Munukayumbwa sentenced him to 4 months imprisonment with hard labour in order to deter would be offenders.
