JOHN KOMBE writes@SunZambianTWO mobile money booth attendants of hongwe have been sentenced to 18 months simple imprisonment in a case of theft by servant.Christabel Tanasho, 22 and Mary Tanasho 24 appeared for judgement before Chongwe magistrate Majory Saasa.Particulars of the offense are that on 5th and 6th June this year, the duo did on two counts steal K7,200 and K12,814 respectively. The money is said to have been the property of their employer Evaristo Lyainga also of Chongwe.It is alleged that the duo did steal the money and later claimed that the money was lost in a transaction in which the money turned into paper after a transaction. However the complainant told the court that he had not been availed the said paper that had magically converted.The complainant earlier applied for the case to be withdrawn, but the court refused to grant the prayer as the accused were still denying the charge.Based on the sufficiency of the evidence before court and testimony by the prosecution witnesses, the court ruled that the prosecution had indeed proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.The court therefore found the duo guilty and convicted them accordingly.In mitigation, the duo pleaded for leniency and promised to reform. The court considered their plea and that the two were first offenders, but observed that the crime was increasing in Chongwe and as such there was need to deter would be offenders.The court also observed that the offense was more serious than a mere theft and merited a sentence of up to 7 years.The court therefore sentenced the duo to 18 months simple imprisonment from the day of conviction.The duo could not believe the judgement and stood shocked and motionless and had to be called out of the dock and led into the prison truck.
