SUITCASE THIEF JAILED

MULENGA MUSONDA writes@SunZambianA CHOMA man will spend 12 months in jail for stealing Suitcase containing clothes at Bus Station in Choma.This was in a matter in which Derrick Choonga of Choma’s Batoka Township was arraigned to the Choma Magistrates Court to answer to charges of Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia.Particulars of the offence are that Choonga stole 1 Suitcase, 1 Underwear, 1 Vest, Dresses, Chitenges, 1 Phone among other items all valued at K4,119 the property of Precious Simuusa.The theft happened on September 9, 2020 in Choma District of Southern Province.When he appeared for plea before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, he willingly admitted the allegations made against him compelling the Court to record a plea of guilty.According to the facts stated by Senior Public Prosecutor Alex Syulikwa, the accused stole the suitcase that was placed near the complainant and took to his heels whilst she was waiting for a bus to travel to Kalomo District.He was later apprehended following the complainant spotting of the suitcase after it was sold to a Mr Kingswell at K40.Despite pleading for lenience and showing some remorse, the Court slapped Choonga with 12 Months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from his date of arrest in order to deter would be offenders.
