SOUTH UPND ELATED OVER POLICE RESTRUCTURING
By ANDREW MUKOMA THE UPND in Southern Province has been elated with the direction President Hakainde Hichilema has taken in restructuring the defence and security wing, particularly the Zambia Police Service. Provincial spokesperson, Neto Halwabala, observed that the structural changes in the Zambia Police Service were long overdue. Mr Halwabala said the most important and inspiring decision was to relive the Provincial Commissioners of Police whose allegiance to the Inspector General of Police became problematic as they were also Presidential appointees. “Indeed it is a new dawn and freedom is here. This is also an indication that President Hichilema is not power hungry but wants to devolve power to others,” he said. He said this is contrary to a scenarios where Provincial Commissioners and IGs were appointed and sworn in by the President which created conflict. Mr Halwabala stated that President Hichilema’s counsel to the police was timely on the arbitrary arrests. He said clearly with this direction under the new government, human rights would be respected under the watch of President Hichilema.
