Smuggling charges land man in court

MULENGA MUSONDA writes A NAKONDE is appearing before the Nakonde Magistrates Court for Smuggling four Vehicles in Zambia thereby defrauding the Country of over K100, 000 in revenue. In this matter Innocent Simengwe is charged with 4 counts of smuggling contrary to the Customs and Exercise Act of the Laws of Zambia. Allegations in all the 4 Counts combined , are that Simengwesmuggled 4 Vehicles namely: Toyota Allion, Harrier, Rav 4 and Toyota Hiace Van into the Country purporting that the vehicles were in transit to Zimbabwe when in fact not. This alleged action led to defrauding the Country of more than K124, 000 in revenue. The alleged incidents are said to have happened between 9th and 15th May 2019 in Nakonde district. When matter came up for ruling before Court yesterday, Magistrate Litungi Litungi found the accused with a case to answer and placed him on his defense. This was after the Court went through all the prosecution evidence and deemed it fit that Simengwe gives his side of the story as the evidence against him was overwhelming. The matter was adjourned to 7th September 2020 for defense with a mention on 20th August. Simengwe elected to call one witness and will give sworn evidence The Sun
