KELVIN SICHIZYA in Kasama writes SEX workers and other Nakonde residents with no fixed abode have fled the border town which is currently the COVID 19 epicentre and taken refuge in Kasama, patronising various business premises in search of survival. Business fortunes in the border town have dropped, hence their resolve to get to Kasama for ‘greener pastures.’ Northern Province Minister Lazarous Chungu Bwalya said it was unfortunate that people have to flee their homes for lack of business to support themselves. The Minister, however, indicated that the commercial sex workers were free to look for survival elsewhere. Mr Bwalya warned however that people in Northern Province needed to make priority choices in order to stay safe He was reacting to reports that sex workers had invaded Kasama after fleeing from Nakonde in Muchingaand  were trying  to make ends meet in Northern Province. He was speaking at his office in Kasama when he briefed the media on new measures his province had put in place to escalate the fight against COVID-19. Mr Bwalya said such people needed to be left alone but advised resident to ensure they stay home and avoid making  wrong choices that would endanger their lives. “They too have survival instincts and are looking for business to make ends meet, but it’s up to you people to be careful and observe social distancing, use face masks at all times when you are in public , but most of all, stay home and be safe,” he advised. Meanwhile, Mr Bwalya has directed the Kasama Municipal Council to maintain all the sanitary facilities in hygienic standards. He said toilet facilities at the newly opened Chikumanino bus station and the Kasama Airport area where truck drivers would be parking their trucks needed to be kept usable and in hygienic conditions.
