FORMER parliamentarian, Lawrence Nyirenda, has asked the Constitutional Court to nullify the election of Brenda Nyirenda as Lundazi Member of Parliament account that she and the Patriotic Front brought Malawians to vote for her in the August 12 elections.Mr Nyirenda, who is the past Lundazi MP, stated that Ms Nyirenda and the Registrar (Department of National Registration Passport and Citizenship) contravened the Constitution of Zambia by allowing Malawians to acquire National Registration Cards, voter’s cards and to vote in Zambia. By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA He is therefore seeking an order of the court to declare Ms Nyirenda’s parliamentary seat null and void.Mr Nyirenda is also seeking a declaration that the Registrar failed or neglected to advise her on the clear violation of the Constitution of Zambia.“The first respondent and PF brought in Malawians to acquire NRCs to enable them vote for her.That the said Malawians were helped to acquire NRCs and voter’s cards to vote for her after giving them handouts such as goats, slaughtered cattle and baby bathing tubs,” he stated.He stated that more than 15 Malawians acquired the NRCs in August last year and the same year in November, they got their voter’s cards.Mr Nyirenda stated that those who tried to stop the foreigners from voting were arrested and fined and were later released the following day from the police custody on instructions from Ms Nyirenda.He said that Ms Nyirenda used an unregistered Toyota Land Cruiser which was given to her by PF to ferry the foreigners.Mr Nyirenda added that the same vehicle was impounded by the police and is currently in custody of the Lundazi Police Station.He said 15 Malawians were captured and had their documents confiscated while the young ones managed to escape.“That in the premise, I plea before this court that the first respondent be disqualified as Lundazi Constituency MP for the reasons of abrogating the Constitution of Zambia which is the supreme law of the land and per evidence as produced and stated in the preceding paragraphs,” Mr Nyirenda submitted.
