‘No COVID-19 case in Kalomo’
MARTIN MASHEKWA writes HEALTH authorities in Kalomo district of Southern province have dispelled speculations among the local community that the district has a Covid 19 suspected case. District director health, Brian Habasimbi confirmed the development to ZANIS following high speculations that a local person who travelled to one of the high-risk COVID-19 areas recently and returned back to Kalomo has put himself into self-quarantine at his house in one of the townships. Dr. Habasimbi said people who are suspected to have travelled to Covid 19 high risk areas are being followed and monitored adding that so far, no Covid 19 case has been reported in the district and claimed that the speculations were unfounded. In another development, most Kalomo residents, especially in the rural outskirts, have not yet taken the ministry of Health preventive measures to either stop the spread or contracting of the Coronavirus seriously. This came to light during a conducted public address sensitization exercise by ZANIS in some selected rural parts of Kalomo Central constituency in conjunction with the health department over the weekend. The local community were found not to be observing guidelines given by the health experts disobeying social distancing, and still shaking hands when greeting one another and were even found taking liquor in large numbers while mourners were still attending funerals en-masse. Putting on masks and washing of hands with soap was also not being adhered to. However, both the local civic and health authorities have stepped rigorous sensitization campaigns in the communities with the two parliamentarians, Harry Kamboni of Kalomo central and Edgar Sing’ombe of Dundumwezi taking lead with the distribution of hand washing buckets and sanitizers to social amenities in their respective constituencies.
