NEW UNIP PREACHES PEACE
By ANDREW MUKOMA ZAMBIANS should remain united as the nation goes to the polls in August this year, newly-elected UNIP member of the central committee Andrew Monde Nalumino has said. Mr Nalumino who assumed his position at the just-ended UNIP National Congress, noted that through unity, the country would maintain integrity and peace, the values for which it is known in Africa and beyond. Mr Nalumino who is also the new acting Southern Province provincial chairman taking over from Captain Robert Mukengami, said his coming into the party as a new leader would bring change in the way things are done politically. “As UNIP, we held our elections under a peaceful condition and we followed all the requirements needed to host an election. There could be one of two issues that went wrong but in an election it is not everyone who can be happy,” he said in an interview in Livingstone. “As new acting provincial chairman and member of the central committee, I want to ensure that Southern Province adopts youths as parliamentary candidates because in these other political parties, they still believe in old blood,” he said. Mr Nalumino said that for a very long time, youths had shunned politics as itwas perceived to be a dirty game but, time has come for young people to take up leadership as future leaders. “We need youths and women in leadership like we did in 2016. Southern Province under UNIP was the only region that had adopted young people and women to stand as candidates… So that is what I am going to advocate for. “So far, we have seen a lot of women and youths showing interest to stand because they have seen that UNIP is the only political party which is accommodative and funds candidates from day one up to the last day,” he said.
