Mopani acquisition, game changer – Lusambo

By NATION REPORTER THE acquisition of 100 percent shares of Mopani Copper Mines by Government through ZCCM-IH is an economic game changer for Zambia, says Lusaka Province Minister, Bowman Lusambo. Mr Lusambo who is Kabushi Member of Parliament, said the takeover of the mine guarantees citizens of increased benefits from their mineral wealth. He has advised UPND president Hakainde Hichilema to desist from allegedly undermining the Mopani Mine transaction to gain cheap political mileage. He was reacting to remarks by Mr Hichilema that ZCCM-IH had no capacity to run Mopani Copper Mines plc and that foreign investors would be found when he becomes president after the August 12 elections. Mr Lusambo said contrary to Mr Hichilema’s careless assertions, the acquisition of Mopani Mine would save over 15, 000 jobs while boosting revenue collection from the mining industry. He also said mine suppliers are now assured of increased business with Mopani. Mr Lusambo urged Zambians to ignore political leaders advancing selfish agendas at the expense of national interests. And a Consortium of Local Contractors and Allied Suppliers says the acquisition of majority shares in Mopani by ZCCM-IH is a relief to the nation. Consortium of Local Contractors President John Chilupula said the development will see more Zambians getting empowered through contracts. Mr Chilupula said that local contractors and suppliers have for a long time being sidelined by investors. On Tuesday this week, Government announced that through ZCCM-IH it had acquired 100 percent shareholding in Mopani Copper Mines in a $1.5 billion deal.
