LUNGU IS A CHAMPION OF DEMOCRACY-SCOTLAND By OLIVER SAMBOKO FORMER President Edgar Lungu is not a loser but a champion of democracy and peace, Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland has said. Ms Scottland said the recently held general elections would go down in the world history books as an election without losers and winners.Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Zambia’s 7th Republican President Hakainde Hichilema at Heroes Stadium yesterday, Ms Scotland said while President Hakainde won the presidency, Mr Lungu won the hearts of the people who love peace and unity. “While President Hichilema won an election, President Lungu won the hearts of the people for accepting defeat and peacefully handing over power to his successor,” said Ms Scotland. Ms Scotland also said yesterday marked a great day for peace in Africa, in Commonwealth and all those who cherished and loved peace and democracy. She said Zambia had made the world proud especially the 54 Commonwealth nations and its 2.5 billion people.Ms Scotland said many feared that the just ended election would not end in peace.“The divisions had gone too far to sustain peace, but the world is happy that the people of Zambia made it possible to have a peaceful election,” she said. She said the church, civil society and other partners, stood together with the people of Zambia and created space for peace.Ms Scotland said the UK government of her majesty Queen Elizabeth will continue standing with the Zambian people to achieve social and economic development.
