Luano council diversifies
PETER MALASHA writes IN a quest to boost financial base and promote sustainability, Luanodistrict Council will venture into agriculture and other lucrative businesses, District Council Chairperson Gabriel Mwami has said. Reverend Mwami said this would be done in order to open up other sources of income unlike depending on the Central Government for funding. Rev Mwami said the local authority was working hard to cast the net wider and enhance financial viability. In an interview, the council chairman said plans were underway to invest in aquaculture so as to boost the revenue base while the local authority was looking for partners and expertise to work with to run the venture. He said land was readily available for the project but that the council needed finances to implement the programme. Rev Mwami said the council also wanted to invest in high value crops such as soya beans as well as maize production to realise profit. “We want to have our own farms and fish ponds. We want to have our own projects.  We are trying to see how we can put our heads and finances together and of course work with partners that are offering the incentives towards that achievement so that we become independent. Rev Mwami added that the intentions were to own shops, farms and mines as a local authority so that sufficient profit could be generated. The Sun
