BY KETRA KALUNGA THE liquidation of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) will with soon, Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe has said. He said in an interview that KCM was faced with a lot of problems because of the liquidator and assured that the matter would soon be resolved. Mr Kabuswe said the government would guide the nation on whether it would look for another investor to run KCM or not once the liquidation was dealt with. “We have not made any statement as to who is going to do what with the mines. We are going to make a comprehensive policy statement on the mining sector so as of now, the status quo is what it is until a policy statement is issued,” he said. Mr Kabuswe said the government would keep all the mines running because mining was still the backbone of the economy. He said the new administration’s plan is to make Zambia one of the greatest mining countries in the world. “We will also ramp up production in the mining sector through recapitalisation.  Now the route of recapitalisation of the mines that is where we need to make a statement whether we will go the route of privatisation or whichever route,” Mr Kabuswe said.
