Kafulafuta dam project reaches 84% completion

Works on the 450 million United States dollar Kafulafuta water dam project in Masaiti district on the Copperbelt have reached 84 percent completion point. Meanwhile, government is happy with the progress of works at the multimillion dollar project despite the Covid 19 pandemic which has ravaged the world economy. Water, Sanitation And Environmental Protection Minister Jonas Chanda says the project is expected to uplift the water and sanitation situation on the Copperbelt province.  Speaking when he inspected works at the facility, Dr Chanda stated that the project was in line with the attainment of the vision 2030 and seventh national development goals on sanitation and universal access to clean and safe water. Dr. Chanda further thanked President Edgar Lungu for initiating various water projects in the province. “The Copperbelt has been a beneficiary of so many water projects in excess of 900 million United States dollars and we would like to thank his Excellency for that” he said. Dr Chanda was accompanied by Copperbelt Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe, Luanshya mayor Nathan Chanda and other senior government officials. And Copperbelt Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe said the project will transform the water supply situation on the Copperbelt province. Mr Mwakalombe further expressed happiness with the good workmanship exhibited by local contractors on the project. He said this was a clear indication that local contractors are able to take up complicated and vital construction projects. Meanwhile, Kafubu Water Planning And Implementation Manager Paul Bilima said over 20,000 customers will be connected to safe and clean drinking water once the project is completed. He added that the dam is also strategically positioned to promote fish farming and tourism activities in Mpongwe and Masaiti districts. “This dam is strategically positioned and will change how we do business as a utility, it will be an addition of 35 percent to our already existing structure.” he said.
