Expert testifies in counterfeit notes case
RABECCA BANDA writes @SunZambian AN expert told a Lusaka magistrate’s court how he examined 372 pieces of K100 notes which he determined to be counterfeit. This was in a matter in which Maybin Simfukwe and Tobias Musonda are charged with possession of counterfeit notes before magistrate Chinunda Chiwaula. The witness, Mr Rodgers Chisolalito, a crime and prevention officer at the Bank of Zambia with 20 years’ experience said he examines currency notes to determine whether they are genuine  or not. Mr Chisolalito said on October 2, 2020 an officer from the Drug Enforcement Commission delivered 372 pieces of K100 notes suspected to be counterfeit for verification purposes. He said each genuine note has a unique serial number for identification purposes. He said he looked at the serial numbers and the security thread which appeared to be broken. Mr Chisolalito said after thorough investigation, it was found that the notes were counterfeit. He said counterfeit notes distort the economy thereby causing high inflation rate. Mr Chisolalito said he could not identify the two accused persons because he never met them and his role was to examine the authenticity of the notes. Both accused persons had no questions to ask the witness.
