MARY PHIRI writes HER LYING tongue and secretive ways ended an eight-year marriage, but the straw that broke the camel’s back was the discovery that she had hired a “mother”. A woman of Chifubu Township in Ndola has been divorced on ground that she is secretive and lied to her husband about her biological mother. In this case, Nelson Munthali 38, sued Sabina Chanda, 32, for divorce in the Chifubu Local Court. Munthali told the court that he wanted to divorce his wife of eight years because she was very secretive and dishonest. He was giving evidence before local court presiding magistrates, Besa Mushibwe and Celestine Muchimba. Munthali said that their marriage was peaceful until he discovered that the woman she had introduced to him as her mother was not in fact her biological mother but some woman she organised to dupe him. He said he loved Chanda and the children they had together but regretted that he could not stand the lies especially concerning her parents and wondered how many lies she told him. In her testimony, Chanda told the court that she loved her husband too much to let him go over such an issue and that she was willing to change for the sake of her marriage and the safety of her children. “I love my husband, he is good hearted and cares for our children for these reasons, I am against this divorce and apart from that our children need both of us in their journey through life,” she said. Chanda knelt before her husband in court to forgive her and take her back but Munthali remained adamant that their marriage should end immediately. The court told Chanda that in as much as the court was expected to reconcile marriages, it had no right to force anyone to stay in a relationship they did not want anymore and granted divorce. “Munthali, Chanda was your wife, so you will compensate her K8,000, with a first instalment of K500 and K250 per month and in addition you will give her K250 child support every month,” Magistrate Muchimba ordered.
