Digging up stillborn babies evil – Mukupa

NOEL IYOMBWA writes A FORMER civic leader in Matero constituency has implored law enforcers to bring to book culprits behind the exhuming of bodies of stillborn babies at Chingwere cemetery. Lee Mukupa said Zambia is a Christian nation hence authorities will not allow any doings by some sections of society. He noted that it is a taboo and unZambian for someone to exhume bodies of dead people for whatever purposes. He said that as community leader of Matero, he will work with the police to bring the culprits to book. “We will not condone evil, Zambia is a Christian nation we will pray that the culprits are brought to book and we will do anything to help the police, “he said. He said that a grave yard is supposed to be respected by everyone as it is scared place. Lusaka City Council (LCC) announced that some unscrupulous people are exhuming bodies of still born babies at Chingwere cemetery for unknown motives. The unethical act is suspected to be done at night as such discoveries by LCC workers are made in the morning when they report for work.  According to findings, the people behind the act are cutting umbilical cords and other parts from the bodies for unknown use. To curb the vice, LCC in conjunction with Zambia Police and Community Neighborhood Watch groups have intensified patrols in the cemetery. Any person found loitering in the cemetery at awkward times will be apprehended. The Council has also enhanced the clearing of overgrown vegetation in the cemeteries. Approximately, 89 hectares of land has been cleared at Chingwere cemetery, 120 hectares at Leopards Hill cemetery and 75 hectares at Chunga cemetery. LCC  is appealing to members of the public that they should report all illegal activities happening in the cemeteries to Council or Zambia Police.
