Defilement accelerates

THE Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) has recorded an upward surge of defilement cases.The organisation has recorded a total of 181 cases of defilement between January and September, 2020, with 177 cases involving female children and 4 cases male teenagers.During the same period last year, the institution recorded 126 cases of defilement involving girl children and one for a male child.YWCA Executive Director Patricia Ndhlovu has bemoaned the continued increase in the number of defilement cases in the country.Ms Ndhlovu noted that despite many people being given stiff sentences for defilement, the country has continued to see increased cases in communities.“Most cases are recorded within families or people that are well known to the victim, this is very traumatic on the victims.” She said.She has encouraged people to report such cases and not shelf them as more children will be at risk if the assailants are left scot free.Ms Ndhlovu advised parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and take note if there is a sudden change in behaviour and to ensure they find out what is going on in the lives of their children so the children both male and female are protected from such vices.– ZANIS The Sun
