Chingola choked with illegal structures
SANFROSSA MANYINDA writes @SunZambian CHINGOLA has recorded the highest number of demolition of illegal structures on the Copperbelt in the year 2020. According to the Mayor, Titus Tembo, the trend has continued to grow due to interference from other stakeholders especially Members of Parliament. Mr Tembo explained that a certain quarter of the local leadership looked at law breakers as potential voters which he said was not supposed to be the case. He said most of the illegal constructions had the blessings from some quarters of the local leadership. “I am very disappointed that some of the local leaders are supporting such behaviour since they consider such people as the only voters. But as council we have made it very clear, we are not going to relent. “I can assure you that even now we are planning through a court order to demolish not less than 100 illegal structures in the next few days,” he said. Mr Tembo expressed disappointment that some people had started reconstructing their structures that were demolished some time back in certain areas. He warned that such people would face the wrath of the law as anarchy would not be allowed in the mining town. The Mayor said it was unfortunate that many people thought that they would receive political support from the people once they allowed them to do what they wanted. Mr Tembo however reminded the stakeholders that by allowing illegalities, a scar would be created stating that it would be difficult for the incoming leadership to sort out. “It is unfortunate that this country has got so many laws that lack policy. We need to change the way we do things and start telling people the correct way they are supposed to behave regardless of the agendas we have,” the Mayor said.
