MUKWIMA CHILALA writes THE fate of Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) 2020 league will only be dependent on when the government will open sports activities, Director of Rugby Nobble Chisanga has said. Chisanga says that with only one league game having fulfilled on the calendar before the suspension of games, the union could declare the 2020 season null and void should the government open sports activities with only a month to go before the scheduled close of the calendar. He said that the union would also take into consideration issues of the financial capabilities of the clubs as most of them had been affected by the Covid-19 partial lockdown. Noble noted that it would be very difficult for the union to make a pronouncement regarding the league before looking at what the Government had put in place. “We only played the first weekend games in March meaning we are in Week One with one game played so it would be very difficult from our side to even make a pronouncement before we look at what the government has put in place,” Chisanga said. “But we are looking at other considerations such the financial capacity of the clubs, because we definitely know that most teams have been hit badly the Covid-19 pandemic. So what is going to determine the future basically is the period at which the government will open then will look at the league calendar if they open with less than a month to end the year then definitely we can’t continue,” he said. Chisanga, however, said that the Rugby Union had been engaging the government through the ministry of sport and would follow the guidance. The Zambia Rugby union league had only played week one of the 2020 season prior to the suspension of all sports activities in March this year. The Sun
