By Hannock Kasama – Vice President INONGE WINA has refuted reports that people around the Barotse Plain are likely to be relocated, following the impending nomination of the area as one of the World Heritage sites. Mrs. WINA says while government is delighted with the prospective international recognition of the Barotse plains, efforts are being made to ensure the surrounding villages are preserved. She has also called for robust measures to tap into the country’s heritage sites to boost economic growth through tourism. She says President EDGAR LUNGU is committed to developing the tourism sector as evidenced by the seventh national development plan and vision 2030. Mrs. WINA said this in Lusaka today during the official launch of the campaign towards the nomination of the Barotse Plain as one of the World Heritage Sites. The campaign is dubbed ‘From Barotse to the World Campaign.’ At the same function, Ministry Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary PATRICK LUNGU said tourism if well harnessed can contribute immensely to economic development. And Worldwide Fund for Nature Country Director NACHILALA NKOMBO said the preservation of heritage site is key to the promotion of tourism. Meanwhile, the Barotse Royal Establishment is delighted with the nomination of the Barotse Plain as one of the world heritage sites.
