Assaulting of the cop by the UPND cadres unfortunate
Assaulting of the cop by the UPND cadres unfortunate Dear Editor, A POLICE officer was last Monday assaulted by the United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres. The cadres in question attacked the Patriotic Front (PF) secretariat earlier in the day. This was when the party’s senior officials had a briefing. As if this was not enough, the UPND cadres were on rampage beating people in the Central Business District (CBD) on the material day. The motive behind such thuggery by the cadres is unknown. President Hakainde Hichilema is on record as categorically stating that he would not condone any form of political violence by the political cadres under his administration. Political violence is an affront to democracy. As such, it should not be allowed to prevail. I therefore implore the police to launch a manhunt and ultimately arrest the political cadres who perpetrated violence last Monday on innocent people. In my opinion, I feel political mayhem is gone. This is in view of the fact that the political campaigns which were characterised by violence are now over. It is high time the country moved forward under the new administration. The question begging for an answer is;”why should people fight one another under the guise of divergent political opinions?” The point worth noting is that Zambia is bigger than any political party or any particular individual. As peace loving Zambians, let us learn to co-exist in the spirit of promoting One Zambia One Nation. Peace should be the bedrock of democracy in our country. Political violence regardless of the perpetrators should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Whether the perpetrator of political violence belongs to the ruling UPND or the Patriotic Front, the full wrath of the law should take its course. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.
