THE fifteen Grade nine female pupils who were admitted to St. Paul’s Clinic after consuming suspected poisoned local brew have been discharged, Kapiri Mposhi district commissioner, Smart Mwila has said.Mr Mwila has confirmed that all the affected girls are now out of danger. He said seven girls were discharged on Wednesday around 14:00 hours while the remaining eight were discharged yesterday. On Tuesday this week, 15 girls who were writing their GCE Examinations at Bruneli Basic School in Kapiri Mposhi were hospitalized after consuming a local brew suspected to be poisoned. This happened after the girls, aged between 15 and 21 years, decided to drink the local brew to celebrate their successful completion of writing their GCE Examinations final paper in Art and Design. The traditional beer was brewed earlier that day by one of the affected girls which was meant to be consumed after writing their final GCE examination paper. But after consuming the beer, the pupils experienced stomach pains, vomiting and purging and were rushed to St. Paul’s Clinic for treatment around 22:00 hours on the material day.Meanwhile, Mr Mwila has bemoaned the increased trend of pupils in examination classes engaging in beer drinking upon writing their last examination papers in the district.“We are happy that all the affected girls are out of danger and discharged from the clinic after receiving treatment but this is a lesson to other pupils not to engage in beer drinking whenever they finish writing exams,” Mr Mwila said.
