12 Mkushi outlets shut
By PETER MALASHA THE Mkushi District Council swung into action and confiscated alcoholic beverages worth over K5,000 and music system from defiant bar owners operating illegally. In the clamp down, 12 outlets were shut down while scores of patrons including underage were apprehended. The alcohol beverages were seized during operation conducted by the local authority combined with state police in Nkumbi, Kasokota and the Central Business District (CBD). In an interview, Public relations officer Tamara Mwanza said 12 retail outlets were closed down because they did not comply with the COVID-19 prevention guidelines. Ms Mwanza said out of the 12 bars, five had their liquor licences revoked for contravening the law while some patrons who were found drinking were also nabbed including some of the under-aged. “Out of the12 bars we revoked five licenses and managed to nab some patrons. Some of them were the under-aged and were drinking which is not allowed,” Ms. Mwanza said. Ms Mwanza added that bar owners had been taken to court and would start appearing in court soon while the alcohol beverages had been put on auction. “And we would like to warn the public to desist from this act of doing things that are not supposed to be done. The law will take its course and visit anybody who is not adhering to the said measures,” she said. Ms Mwanza urged the community to take preventative guidelines seriously as coronavirus was real.
